Introduction
Catch & Release is a mobile application that streamlines small equipment management for field technicians by enabling real-time tracking, automated logging, and availability alerts. The app eliminates manual paperwork, reduces equipment loss, and provides managers with instant visibility into resource allocation. Using barcode scanning, GPS tracking, and intuitive check-in/check-out workflows, the solution improved operational efficiency and equipment accountability across multiple job sites.
Problem
Many traditional lighting systems fail to support the diverse needs of daily activities. People often experience eye strain, disrupted sleep, and decreased productivity because of harsh, inconsistent lighting.

Don’t agonize. Organize.
Ideation 1
This phase involved extensive user research through interviews, surveys, and card sorting to uncover client needs, motivations, and challenges. A crucial problem emerged: equipment was frequently replaced due to lack of accountability, causing budget overruns and project delays when necessary tools weren't available. Competitive analysis and industry trend research revealed no existing applications adequately addressed the client's specific needs. Data analysis identified key user insights that informed detailed user profiles and problem statements. Technicians expressed frustration with the current system of emailing, calling, or texting about inventory availability—a process they found time-consuming and easy to forget. These findings guided the development of an intuitive content structure and navigation system. The comprehensive research culminated in an application concept that addresses inventory tracking pain points while incorporating cost-saving features and tools to enhance technician retention.

Successful people are simply those with successful habits.
Ideation 2
The design process progressed to creating low-fidelity wireframes that established the app's structure and content hierarchy. Multiple critique sessions with the client refined the high-fidelity wireframes until a clean, simple design incorporating their brand identity emerged as the optimal solution for users. Interactive, clickable prototypes were then developed to simulate the user experience and collect functionality feedback.
Solution
After addressing the client's initial problems, opportunities emerged to enhance productivity and efficiency through additional features. These included an automated alert system, direct messaging to the warehouse manager, barcode scanning implementation, and comprehensive equipment profiles with age, manufacturer, and warranty information.
Following stakeholder approval, iterative testing, and refinements, Catch & Release was ready for launch.
Impacts
Catch & Release transformed the client's approach to equipment tracking and inventory management by providing real-time monitoring and automated alerts for missing equipment, special orders, and inventory changes.
Financial Impact: The app significantly reduces equipment replacement and downtime costs by ensuring tool accountability and availability. It also enhances budget forecasting, procurement planning, and project profitability analysis.
Operational Efficiency: The app accelerates job completion by guaranteeing tool availability and eliminating time spent searching for equipment across multiple job sites. Proactive maintenance scheduling prevents unexpected equipment failures, while streamlined digital check-out/check-in processes eliminate paperwork and administrative delays.
Employee Benefits: The app reduces technician frustration by eliminating missing tools and equipment issues, leading to increased productivity and job satisfaction. It establishes clear accountability without creating a blame culture while enabling better resource allocation across teams.
